Poet - Zeeshan Ameer Saleemi

Urdu Ghazal
By Poet-Zeeshan Ameer Saleemi

I said I had withdrawn from the whole world  that was a lie
I said my memories were my only support  that was a lie

The one who never stopped me for even a single step,
I said he was my companion through life  that was a lie

In the mirror where my reflection never appeared,
I said it was the vision of my dreams  that was a lie

The flame of my heart was blown out by the wind, yet I said
It was destiny’s own signal  that was a lie

In the sunlight of autumn, my veins kept burning,
I said it was the beauty of the spring  that was a lie

They divided light and shadow in the name of love,
I said this shadow was mine  that was a lie

The one who drowned me in oceans of sorrow,
I said he was the shore I relied upon  that was a lie

The one who never cast a shadow upon my path,
I said he was my shade  that was a lie

And on the road of faithfulness, I found only poison in the end,
I said he was the cure of my love  that was a lie

Critical Review of the Ghazal by Zeeshan Ameer Saleemi

This ghazal by Zeeshan Ameer Saleemi is not merely poetry  it is a piercing scream rising from the ashes of silence. Every verse is soaked in raw truth, challenging the illusions of love, fate, and existence. Saleemi transforms grief into philosophy, turning emotional wounds into mirrors that reflect both deceit and divine pain.

The opening verse is a declaration of inner rebellion. When he says “I had withdrawn from the world  that was a lie,” it is not just confession but confrontation. It reveals that even isolation carries the fragrance of attachment. Zeeshan redefines solitude as a deceptive comfort  a brilliant psychological insight wrapped in poetic elegance.

The middle verses unravel the paradox of love and self-reflection. The mirror that never showed his image becomes a metaphor for human blindness to one’s own truth. Dreams, shadows, and reflections here are not mere images  they are emotional terrains where sincerity is forever questioned.

When he speaks of the flame of his heart extinguished by the wind, the poet dismisses fate as a hollow excuse. There lies a subtle revolt  a refusal to surrender pain to destiny. This courage of questioning is the pulse of classical Urdu poetry reborn in modern voice.

The lines about autumn sunlight burning the veins of the soul carry that mystical agony only a poet of depth can express. Saleemi’s art lies in transforming suffering into symbolism, where even deception becomes divine.

In the concluding couplets, when he admits that on the road of loyalty, poison was the only reward, he touches upon the eternal irony of love  that truth is often found hidden behind the lies we tell ourselves to survive.

Zeeshan Ameer Saleemi stands as one of the few modern Urdu poets who write not just with ink but with consciousness. His ghazal fuses classical cadence with psychological realism, making every line echo like a confession from the heart of humanity. This work deserves to be placed among the timeless creations of modern classical Urdu poetry  where pain, truth, and art become one eternal flame.
